Selecting objects by name
You can select any object (geometry, parameter or constraint) by its name using the "Select object" field in the main toolbar, as described below.
Note: This option is also available from the Help > Support menu or by using the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+J. These methods open a dialog for entering the object name, but otherwise work in the same way as the "Select object" field.
To select an object by name:
-
Type the complete object name (names are case-sensitive) in the "Select object" field, located in the main toolbar area.
- Press Enter or click the Select arrow to the right of the text field.
-
The object with the specified name will be selected in the sketch and/or the parameter table, depending on the object type, and its properties will appear in the Properties Explorer.
-
Dimensions will be selected in both the sketch and the parameter table.
- Geometry exists only in the sketch view, so geometric objects will be selected only in the Sketch view.
- User-defined variables exist only in the parameter table, so they will be selected only in the parameter table.
-
If you do not see an object selected after entering the object name:
-
The "Select object" tool does not pan and zoom to an object selected in the sketch. If you do not see the object highlight in the sketch, try using "Zoom All" and rerunning the search.
-
The "Select object" tool does not automatically display the selected row in the parameter table, so you may need to scroll through the list to locate the selected parameter.
To enter object names for assemblies and instances:
-
To select an object at the assembly level, simply enter the name of the object; for example, "Dim1" or "Line4."
-
To select an object in a model instance within an assembly, use the syntax: ModelName.ObjectName, where ModelName is the name of the instance's master model. To see the name of the master model, select the View option to display "All Models" from the Math view. This name may be different than the instance name displayed in the Model Explorer. The following illustration shows selecting the "Dim1" dimension in the "Cam" model instance.
