Modifying model instances within an assembly using In-Place Edit

In-place edit lets you edit model instances from inside an assembly, without opening the master model separately. In-Place Editing is a mode that you can turn on for any model instance. When you are done editing that model instance, you turn the mode off.

Editing a model using In-Place Editing gives you the advantage of seeing the other parts in the model as you make your changes. Alternatively, you can open the master model separately for edit; for example, you would need to open the master model for edit if you plan to branch the instance, because In-Place Edit will make the changes directly to the master model with no opportunity to branch the changed model.

To edit an instance using In-Place Editing:

  1. Select a model instance from the Model Explorer.
  2. In the Selected Object area of the Properties Explorer, toggle on In Place Edit,
    or
right-click on the instance and select Start In-Place Editing.

While in In-Place Edit mode, the dimensions and constraints for the selected model instance are shown in the sketch and the tolerance analysis spreadsheet does not display. During In-Place Editing, you can edit only the currently selected model. You cannot select any other model in the sketch. (You can, however, highlight other models by selecting them from the Model Explorer tree.)

  3. Save your changes. (The model instance will be highlighted as changed -- that is, displayed in bold, italic text -- in the Model Explorer tree.)

  4. To exit In-Place Edit mode, toggle off In Place Edit in the Properties Explorer,
    or
right-click on the instance being edited in the Model Explorer, and select Stop In-Place Editing.
